Nokia 6110 Navigator

Your car companion

The 6110 is the first phone from Nokia that features a complete navigation system, hence carries the suffix “Navigator”. The 6110 Navigator sports a one touch easy access to GPS function and maps. The 6110 comes in a shiny jet black body with silver colour face. The build quality of the phone is pretty average; however the slider mechanism of this phone is much better than some of the N-series phones. The spring guided slider mechanism requires some effort to slide up and slide down.

The numeric keys are visible only when you slide up the front face of the phone. While other buttons like the navigation key, menu key, cancel and a dedicated GPS button are present on the front face of the phone. Along the sides are buttons to adjust the volume, take photos and read your messages, as well as covers hiding the mini-USB connector and the bundled 512MB microSD card.

The 2.2in screen displays good colours but is small as compared to other Nokia business series and multimedia series phones. On the imaging front, the 6110 is equipped with dual cameras. The main one is a 2-megapixel one that needs to be activated by opening the protection slide. This protection slide requires a strong push to open. The other camera is a standard VGA type. A dedicated shutter release button helps you click photos. The qualities of the photos were acceptable but not much to write home about. Mounted above the front camera is a light sensor which adjusts the screen’s brightness level according to current lighting conditions.

As a Smartphone, the 6110 can handle all popular multimedia formats and can also let you perform office tasks like preparing Word documents, spreadsheets and more. The phone comes with a flash player that lets you play flash files as well. On the connectivity front, the 6110 lacks Wi-Fi, a strong let down for a good phone of its class. It features Bluetooth and is 3G capable. Being a quad-band phone, the 6110 can be used across the globe. The phone has an internal memory of 40MB and comes bundled with 512MB of microSD card to begin with.

The highlight of the phone is the GPS navigation. It is present on-board and is powered by Route 66, a company which specialises in navigation devices. Once switched on, the device will locate where you are and tell you exactly how to get to any destination. However, we could not test this function as GPS satellites are still not available in India.

At a price tag of Rs18000, without Wi-Fi and considering the fact that GPS is still not fully grown in India, the 6110 Navigator can be given a skip. However, for globe trotters, this one can be a handy phone that can let you navigate unknown streets and reach your destination in the safest possible way.

Overall: A good phone that integrates complete navigation tool but lacks Wi-Fi.
Good points: Good sliding mechanism, navigational features
Bad points: Smudgy body, lacks Wi-Fi
